About
Ryan Heron cut his teeth in documentary filmmaking, where you don’t get second takes and the best moments come unscripted. That grounding gave him a sharp instinct for storytelling, a love for authenticity and a knack for capturing the kind of moments you can't manufacture.
Armed with a sharp eye, a calm set presence, a great sense of humour and just the right amount of technical nerdery, Ryan creates an environment where people feel at ease in front of the camera, resulting in work that feels grounded, human and effortlessly cinematic.
Versatile in genre, Ryan’s repertoire includes drawing stellar on-screen performances from medieval knights, the world’s best surfers, a red retriever named Steve, unruly children and some of New Zealand’s best comedians. He’s also no stranger to high-octane automotive work, having directed several of Mad Mike’s Red Bull films.
His recent directing credits include campaigns for Air New Zealand, Oceania, BNZ and Kia. When he's not calling the shots from the director’s chair, he’s behind the lens as a DOP on projects like improv tv series The Educators, where he continues to flex his visual storytelling muscle.
